Here’s what’s up in our little scene.
-Jose Palafox from Swing Kids is the latest guest on the Cult & Culture show. Listen on various platforms. (I don’t like podcasts, but this one I never miss.)
-Jessie Duke from Bread & Roses Press will be doing a border run to take supplies to asylum seekers that are living in an open air camp on Monday, Oct 16th in San Diego. If you have stuff you can donate please get in touch with me. Items needed include blankets, water, cold weather gear, shelf-stable ready-to-eat foods, and tarps. Jessie can coordinate with you for a pick up or drop off.
-Deaf Club is playing Dark Nectar Coffee in Atascadero tonight.
-My audio book label just finished a tape with Argentina’s Marina Caamaño. It’ll be our first bilingual release. English on one side, Spanish on the other. Listen to a couple stories by Marina here. The tape will be out at the end of the month. Its beautiful title is I am a vending machine of stupid thoughts or Soy una máquina expendedora de pensamientos estúpidos.
-Las Vegas New Mexico Zinefest has announced next year’s festival for April 13th and 14th. Last year a bunch of us went and had a good time. I came home with a kitten.
-On Saturday, Burn All Books is hosting Radical Crip Lit on Wheels for Banned Book Week. Noon to 4pm at their 3131 Adams Ave location.
-Bread & Roses Press, Three One G, and I will be tabling our things at San Diego Zinefest next weekend. I’m tabling the new literary farmstand.
-The Album Leaf is headed off to Asia for some tour dates.
-My friend Charlie Cunningham just announced US and Canadian tour dates. Look him up if you like quiet music. It’s really good.
-Neutral Shirt is playing the Che Cafe on 10/18 with awakebutstillinbed, Good Luck Arthur, Small Talk, and Crush 23. Listen to Neutral Shirt here.
-Nicole Morning has a new audio essay out at her bandcamp.
-My label Hello America Stereo Cassette put out a mixtape today. Talking Songs, 2023 is a collection of what I call talking songs, writing read aloud backed by music. On this one we’ve got new work by Nicole Morning, Mike Elias, andrx fx, Nina B, Chase Griffin with M. Kilcullen, Trace Ramsey, Laurence Lillvik with music by Branstetter, Henricksen, Lillvik (members of Trumans Water, etc), and two from me. Listen here.
-Se Vende has a three-tape set coming out via No Time Records.
-Jon Nix was interviewed on the Scotch and Good Conversation podcast.
-Ebony Tusks are playing Saturday at Auntie Mae’s Parlor in Manhattan, Kansas. They’ll be at Howdy in KCMO on 11/14. One of my favorite bands. Please go see them if you like heavy, intense hip-hop.
