In a week I’m meant to turn my new manuscript in. After that—Bran will do layout, a cover design will be chosen (then sent back and forth between the Bread & Roses camp and me … analyzed, second-guessed, etc). Back cover text will be written describing the book. A print quote will be discussed and decided upon. The book will sit in the queue at the printer’s. Then it will be made (1,000 copies or 2,000 for the first printing, depending upon the price). Those books will be put in boxes and those boxes set on a pallet. Then pick up. Books shipped to Three One G and AK Press. Pre-order announced. Press copies sent out. Interviews scheduled. Then release day and a party at the farm to celebrate it. After that, tour-dates. (I’m planning to tour the fuck out of next year.)
This has been the cycle since right before Covid. In 2019 I decided to write a book a year until I’m unable. This is the End of Something But It’s Not the End of You came out at the beginning of 2020. Then Float Me Away, Floodwaters in 2021 (as well as the private edition On Writing). After Tonight, Everything Will Be Different was released in 2022 and The Internet Newspaper six months ago. I like releasing a book on a holiday so this new book about love will be out Valentine’s Day ‘24.
That’s really all I want to say.
I need to get back to editing.
Stay tuned for some news (below) concerning various friends of mine and one or two strangers.

News
There’s now a San Diego DIY show voicemail phoneline. The number is 619 752 0557. Alejandra updates it daily, so don’t complain about not having good shit to do.
Speaking of which, Neutral Shirt is playing Soda Bar on September 12th with Omo Cloud and Coral Grief, which is an absolutely beautiful name for a band. Their (Coral Grief’s) new record, Daydrops, is really sweet hot-day music. I can only listen to mellow shit at this stage in my deadline and this hits well.)
Pre-order was announced for Lora Mathis’ new book, The Snakes Came Back. You should buy a copy. Pay a visit to the Metatron Press site.
If you love the Plot’s food as much as I do, let it be known they have a new location in Carlsbad. The Plot Express.
I don’t like podcasts, but I love Cult & Culture. There’s a new episode out. Justin Pearson and Luke Henshaw talk to John Reis of Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt, etc.
The book Sun Seekers by Lyra Kilston is excellent and explains (at least partially) why Southern California is how it is. (I think the farm’s copy came from Wonder Fair in Lawrence, KS.)
The Locust’s Plague Soundscapes got a beautiful vinyl reissue. Variants released by Zia Records and Newbury Comics.
I’m still having a sale of my things. If you buy a book or a shirt or a book-on-tape or whatever I’ll love you forever.
You should follow the
Substack. It’s kind of like a magazine in the age of endangered magazines. Ryan knows how to keep it interesting. (Someone give this man a weekly newspaper to run.)There’s a new Natural Lite record out. It’s great. (Miner’s pickaxe to the gold vein of queer country.)
The
Substack is really fucking good. You should follow it. Also, pre-order was announced for the double-book reissue of Black Cloud/Witch Hunt. Both are much recommended. Available from Clash Books.I’ll be sitting behind a table of books at Paper Plains Zine Fest in Lawrence, KS on September 3rd. Come say hi if you’re not an axe murderer. I’ll be at the Ruby Teeth Homestead Literary Farmstand table. If you’re like, “What’s that?” Here.
My broken foot is completely fuckin’ healed. Warning to my enemies that I am now back to the height of my powers and I want kick you into oblivion.
The Foals boys are headlining Reading Fest. That’s pretty nice.
Word around the campfire is Verbatim Books got air-conditioning. I think this smart trend will continue.
I’ll also be tabling the Literary Farmstand at SDZineFest in October alongside the pals Three One G and Bread & Roses Press. It’s always one of my favorite parts of the year.
It’s been really cool hearing from people who are seeing me up on the big screen in the Justin Pearson documentary, Don’t Fall in Love with Yourself. My new nickname is “the Hollywood Terror.” Find info about screenings on Instagram. You can also get a physical copy of the movie here.
