Today I went to watch a Lion Dance in celebration of the Lunar New Year in a crowd of happy people of all ages from all over the world. Afterward I bought Vietnamese spices and Chinese chili oil then had Indian food and talked about sauces with the guy behind the counter and learned my new favorite sauce is called Manchurian Sauce. A couple hours ago I did an interview about my work with a smart, thoughtful guy in Mexico City for a radio show that’s broadcast in Madrid (and is listened to by many Germans and French, he said). He told me things I didn’t know about Juan Rulfo and made me feel okay about the weird audio shit I do. (We agreed the guitar line in “Pale Blue Eyes” is wonderful.) The world is a good place and most people are good I think. Colonialism is not. Land grabs are not. Borders are not. We could have something so nice, so profoundly sweet, but we fuck it up drastically, and on so many levels. Don’t fuck it up.
