Hello friends and strangers,
I’m switching this thing over to a daily format. “The Adam Gnade Daily,” like a daily newspaper, but just a daily thought or two—ideas, confessions, recommendations, new art I’m into, things that make the world (or my world) better. It’ll be shorter than what I’ve been doing here; no more than a few sentences a day. Maybe no photos and definitely no videos because I feel like we’re all overstimulated to the point of seasickness by imagery and motion these days.
Algorithm-era social media continues to feel like suffocation. The worst part is that because I need to sell books to make a living I’ve become reliant upon it. What happens is I post about my books, people order those books. I spend a while not posting about my books, the orders slow down considerably. It’s a gross cycle and I’m looking for new healthier ways. Maybe Substack is that? I don’t know. I’m still feeling it out. (Lora’s recent essay about unfollowing everyone on Instagram and how slow life was before the current incarnation of social media is well worth a read.)
Oh, and Fridays will continue to be about friend news. The friend news part of this is what I like best. If you have any sort of platform you should use it to give a boost to the people whose work you love. I always made a point of reading Devendra Banhart’s early interviews because I liked how he spent a lot of the time deflecting attention from himself toward artists he was into. That’s one thing I hope to do here.
Well, okay, keep an eye out tomorrow.
Now, because it’s Friday, here’s a little friend news.
-AG
-Erik Tinsely is on Substack now. I really love his writing and consider him to be a class A creature. Nothing’s posted yet but go follow
. (Listen to Erik read his writing here.)-Bart Schaneman will be tabling the Indie Author and Press Bookfair at Counterpath tomorrow/Saturday. If you’re in Denver, check that out. If you want a great read (one of my favorites) buy his book The Green and the Gold from Trident Press.
-The astronauts at Numero Group launched a copy of Duster’s Stratosphere into space today. Maybe you know Numero picked up my talking songs record/audio book Run Hide Retreat Surrender. Feelin’ like I’m in good hands at the moment.
-The ECM in Lawrence, Kansas does a free vegan lunch on Thursdays. It’s really good. Food No Bombs style. Get there early and grab some Wheatfields bread.
-My audio book label released a cassette of Troy James Weaver’s novella Marigold this morning.
-The pals in Satanic Planet performed at the Indianapolis State Capitol yesterday to much protest. Go find the videos. It’s pretty wild.
-Note to Germans in Germany: Downtown Boys have been on tour in Europe for a bit. Last show is in Hamburg tonight. If you haven’t heard the record of theirs Sub Pop released you should make it a priority to remedy that.
-I got interviewed about my books by Madeline Howard over at the Creative Independent. I’m told it’ll air soon.
-The Locust has sweet new skatedecks with art by Neil Burke (Men’s Recovery Project, Sinking Body, etc). The art is from the band’s EP Safety Second, Body Last. The decks are available from Bifocal Media.
-Becky DiGiglio shot the cover for the new Filth is Eternal record, Find Out.
-If you’re in or near San Diego, go see and Matty Terrones performing material from Lora’s new book, The Snakes Came Back, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla. Tickets are here.
-I worked out a pretty cool deal regarding my upcoming book, I Wish to Say Lovely Things, with my hometown bookstore, Verbatim Books. Stay tuned for news about that.
-Deaf Club’s tour with Converge starts today. Go see a show.
-Evan Demianczyk will have copies of his photo book, Margin Walker, at tomorrow’s 20/20 Photo Festival in Philly.
-Three One G signed Stress Positions who are pretty sweet if you’re into the frantic and brutal. Their singer Stephanie Brooks has a great voice.
-Scott Osment (Glassing, Satanic Planet, Deaf Club, etc) started a new band with guys from Tile and Super Thief. Keep an eye out for CBS.
-If you’re anywhere near Exeter in the UK, Sacred Grounds is one of the best vegan restaurants I’ve been to. Get their benedict if it’s still on the menu. I played a show there with Andrew Mears this summer and really loved the place and the people who run it.
nice looking forward to the daily edition
