I love Nick Bernal. I say this wholeheartedly, and you should know when I say this that there are many here among us who feel the same way. Nick is one of my favorite thinkers. I like how his mind works. I like talking to him when I'm in San Diego and I like reading anything he writes. There's something both gentle and very honest about Nick Bernal that shines from him like a lantern.
If you find yourself at Bread & Salt Gallery in Barrio Logan, stop by the BAB newsstand, which is like a wooden newsstand you might see in Tijuana or CDMX, but this one is stocked with small press publications and does honor-pay via Venmo if no one is there running the stand.
A couple years ago Nick did a tape of writing for my record label with musical accompaniment by our friend Matty Terrones. It's one of the best things on the label. I've listened to it many times.
There's also the BAB Mail Mag, which is a monthly packet of art and writing that hits your mailbox like a wish fulfilled. I contribute to it and love getting it each month. Highly suggest subscribing.
About this series: The Conversations Series is what it sounds like—transcribed conversations with people I like. Not interviews. Not journalism. Just a nice, in-depth talk about whatever's going on in our lives. Usually about our work. (But it’s definitely not limited to that.) These come out Sunday night because Sunday night feels like a good time to read a long talk between two friends.
Other things-
-I recorded an excerpt from my long out-of-print first novel, Hymn California, as a benefit for LA fire relief. Listen here. (Pay to download it if you'd like to help with fire relief.)
-More new releases from my audio book label.
-Justin Pearson’s book I helped edit is out now via Bread & Roses Press and Three One G.
-Pre-orders are up for the sequel to my DIY Guide to Fighting the Big Sad. That little book will be out in two weeks.
